The Southland District Health Board supports any initiative that improves the health of our community.
It has been proven that children living in areas with fluoride have less tooth decay than children who don't have fluoridated drinking water. Decay also affects adults and we have people in our region living with chronic dental pain from decay that could have been prevented by fluoride.
We ask that residents in Southland District take the time to inform themselves about fluoride before voting in the upcoming referendum. It is important that everyone has their say on this critical issue.

Vote Fluoride :: Support, Compared to national statistics some communities within Southland and Otago have very poor oral health. Examples include preschoolers facing baby teeth extractions under anaesthesia, primary school students with multiple fillings and adults living with ongoing, chronic dental pain that may prevent them working. Otago and Southland District Health Boards have asked local councils to hold referenda to add fluoride into the drinking water supplies of these communities. Fluoride is recommended by the World Health Organisation and New Zealand’s Ministry of Health as a means of improving oral health.
