In response to your letter of 16 august 2007 regarding the upcoming referenda regarding the addition of fluoride to drinking water in various areas throughout the Clutha District.

The Otago Southern Region PHO Board discussed this issue at the board meeting on Wednesday night and agreed to endorse the project as requested.

The PHO Board approved the recommendation and wording as follows:

We support a yes vote in the upcoming fluoride referendum.  Fluoride has been used since the 1950's and has a proven track record as the most safe and effective way of improving oral health.

Thank you

Vote Fluoride :: Support, Compared to national statistics some communities within Southland and Otago have very poor oral health. Examples include preschoolers facing baby teeth extractions under anaesthesia, primary school students with multiple fillings and adults living with ongoing, chronic dental pain that may prevent them working. Otago and Southland District Health Boards have asked local councils to hold referenda to add fluoride into the drinking water supplies of these communities. Fluoride is recommended by the World Health Organisation and New Zealand’s Ministry of Health as a means of improving oral health.
